Stand up paddleboarding an old tradition renewed?

When I was in Hawaii in 1999 I was utterly surprised at how beautiful this state is. Having a rich culture, history, beautiful beaches and lands this made the perfect vacationing spot. During my stay I had the opportunity to see a parade on the water where the natives rode in canoes and this is where I noticed the first paddleboarder. Dressing in Polynesian traditional attire a strong fella stood with a straight back on his board and paddle through the parade. It was quite the sight and it made a huge impression on me.

The history of Standup Paddleboards dates back to 1926 when Thomas Edward Blake, a Pacific Coast Surfriding Champion altered a replica of an “olo surfboard” ridden by ancient Hawaiian kings. He fashioned it into a lighter surfboard turning it into today’s modern version paddleboard.

It was not until years later when we came to New Smyrna Beach that I realized the popularity of standup paddleboarding. We met a happy and pleasantly charming gentleman named Mark that owns Standup Paddle 2 U whom wanted a website redesign. He invited my husband and I, to experience paddleboarding first hand at no charge. Being that I am a bit afraid of getting bitten by a shark I was hesitant but as Mark explained the process I became less fearful.

He explained that people of all body types find it easy to balance and maneuver on a paddleboard. Mark stated he will meet us anywhere we like and he will bring everything we need. He assured us there are many places we can go where the water is crystal clean such as disappearing island.

Paddleboarding is not classified as a sport as it is mostly about having fun at your own leisure and pace. Being that we are not competitive people this would be a great activity to learn.

We are planning on trying this new experience soon and from the reviews I can tell it will be wonderful.  You can bring children and pets to join you making it a fun filled family event.
