Hosting NSB on the Apple vs FBI Battle
As you may have noticed, the media has recently been peppering us with news stories about the current court battle between Apple and the FBI. The court has asked Apple to help the FBI in an investigation by unlocking an iPhone 5c used by one of the San Bernadino shooters. This includes helping to bypass the auto-erase function activated when a wrong pin or password is entered several times. Apple has also been asked to provide a recovery file on the device so that the auto-erase function will not engage.
Apple is trying to overturn the court’s decision for several reasons. They argue that they have worked diligently to ensure the security of their device and should not be asked to weaken those protections. Apple believes this would set a dangerous precedent, putting consumer data at risk from hackers. They also feel that the government is compromising users’ privacy, and that this could have horrible implications, including the government intercepting messages, accessing financial and health records, tracking location and accessing photos.
Several heavy hitters have weighed in on the battle. Bill Gates disagrees with Apple, going on record that this is one particular case and that the government is not asking for more. Facebook and Twitter take the opposite stance, aggressively backing Apple in its fight.
