New Smyrna Beach’s Wildlife

If you love Florida like we do you know that The Indian River Lagoon is one of the great estuarine ecosystems in North America. 156 miles along Florida’s east coast from Ponce Inlet to Jupiter Inlet, and is composed of three inter-connected estuaries. Here you will find a variety of species that inhabit these waters such as Manatees, Dolphins, Sharks, Alligators, Turtles, Stingrays, fish and so much more!

Right here in New Smyrna beach we have The Marine Discovery Center at 520 Barracuda Boulevard. This is the best place to learn about these our marine life. You can also visit their website for more information at http://www.marinediscoverycenter.org/.

Please keep in mind that our marine life is vital to our eco system and it is important to keep our wild life protected. Do not feed or touch the animals for any reason. Although you may think those snacks you are eating are yummy, to a manatee it could be very toxic. We want our sea and land creatures to live for a very long time and this can only happen if we respect and leave them alone.

Note that manatees are endangered species so please use caution when it comes to boating as well. There are signs posted in the water to inform you of local speed limits so you do not disrupt or hurt our magnificent ancient sea creatures.
